The three most deprived areas of Blackpool have been revealed in the latest 2021 census results. The Little Layton and Little Carleton, Central Blackpool and South Promenade and Seasiders Way areas of Blackpool have been revealed as the most deprived in the resort. Office for National Statistics data show 61.8% of households in Blackpool were deprived in at least one of these "dimensions" when the most recent census was carried out. This was the highest proportion of all local authorities in England and Wales, and far above the national average of 51.7%. However, it represented a drop from 68.4% at the time of the last census in 2011. In Blackpool, the three areas with the highest deprivation rates were: 1) South Promenade and Seasiders Way – 73.9% of households here were deprived in at least one dimension at the time of the 2021 census, down from 84.9% in 2011, 2) Little Layton and Little Carleton – 73.7%, falling from 81.5% in 2011, and 3) Central Blackpool – 73.2%, a drop from 80.8% in 2011. The ONS said deprivation is a "complex topic", adding that more detailed information would come in future releases.

Blackpool, a once-glamorous seaside resort, this week overtook Glasgow to have the lowest average male life expectancy in the UK. Men living in Blackpool will now live until just after their 73rd birthday on average, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) study, six years less than the average in the rest of England. The gap between the richest and poorest areas has widened since the Covid pandemic. Blackpool’s average life expectancy for men is now 18 months lower than in 2019. The roots of Blackpool’s ill health can be traced back to its golden era more than a century ago. Blackpool now has some of the cheapest and most squalid housing in the UK, attracting renters in poor health. Dr Arif Rajpura, Blackpool council’s director of public health, knows that the town’s mortality rate among those under 75 is by some distance the worst in England for cancer, cardiovascular disease and for all causes. Blackpool has the country’s highest proportion of children in care, nearly three times the national average. A recent council report revealed that Blackpool had four times the average number of drug deaths, nearly double the rate of smoking deaths, the highest proportion of alcohol deaths and the highest rate of serious mental illnesses in England.
